CATCHING BRUMBIES WITH BULL ARABS

Bullarabs and Brumbies

Story told by Mike Hodgens and Brian Cook  Here's a quick insight to brumby catching   -  first you need a top riding horse — one that has ability -disc brakes – power steering  and can jump. Needs to stay level headed and look after itself and most important the rider . Catchers use a catching rope (lasso) and once the horse is roped a halter is placed on and horse tied to a tree. Back around 1975 Wally Webb (now deceased) of ORBOST near the SNOWY RIVER, rang mike to gain info on the bullarab dogs that mike was advertising. He was always trying to think of easier ways to catch horses while trying not to kill himself. After several calls Wally purchased a dog ,,his name was HULK . HULK proved himself in no time and a bitch was ordered her name was Woody  and these 2 dogs made brumby catching a joke as they would each catch their own horse and made the job very very easy. The arabs were worked with 2 loud mouth kelpies that never shut up ,making the job easy if a horse was caught out of site – made it very easy to find. I remember Wally threating these 2 kelpies often in camp as they would bark at any movement . He used to yell ,,,ill tape your mouths up if yas dont stop , you 2 bastards . This stopped them for awhile ,,,he never ever did but there was times I reckon it came close.  A litter was born from the mating of Hulk and Woody and I got 1 a bitch who was BESS and a mate of mine got a dog called STRIP.  Both these dogs followed in their parents footsteps becoming top brumby dogs. All these dogs at several times through- out their lives  used to catch pigs as well and did this with ease . Stories of these dogs are still told today amongst the brumby catchers for those who have heard the song that slim dusty sang ,,,looking forward ,looking back . Well looking back at these great dogs brings fond memories. The forward part never happened as we didnt have the foresight to continue on breeding them which is something I regret very much now. This story is a tribute to a mate  – a horseman and a real good bloke and to the Bullarab dogs that were bred by Mike Hodgens.

Mike adds-

Great story Brian and well told. I'd like to read any particular accounts if you can remember any. It has surprised the hell out of me what has been coming back to me. I remembered about Wally and the horses. It was the only time I was asked to supply dogs to catch horses. Once an idiot asked me about using dogs to catch crocidiles. I told him to ring Superman – he might have something for him.

    Hi Mike,
I have been reading heaps of stuff online, a lot written by you; about what excellent hunters Bull Arabs are. I’m sure your right. I am the proud owner of a beautiful 5 year old bitch; rescued her from a shelter and she has never been used for a hunting dog. Just wanted to say that Bull Arabs make the best family pets and guard dogs. An incredibly loyal and affectionate breed of dog. Just a statement. please don’t feel obliged to reply.

Hey mike just finished reading your story on the Brumby catching dogs.
There is a story of a bloke from the 60′s and 70′s crock shooting era that had a dog that would find the freshies that had been shot but were still submerged. This dog ( I think was a red cattle) would swim out/walk out and stand on the shot freshie so it could be retrieved until the day it stood on a live freshy and got a polite nip.The old croc shooter said that he had had many dogs before and after this certain dog but none of the others had ever done it.
I am unable to find the book on this bloke at the moment and I’m pretty sure he had a couple of page story written up in Guns and Game magazine either last year or the year before.
Not that this has much to do with anything but it is the closest to the croc catching request you had that I could think of.

    Regards Alex

    HOWDY PIGGA,
DID YOU COME DOWN IN THE LAST SHOWER? THE VIC BOYS WERE HUNTING SAMBAR BEFORE THE POLITICIANS WHO MADE THESE RULES WERE BORN. AS FAR AS I’M CONCERNED GOOD FOR THEM AND UP THE STUPID POLIES.
NOW I’LL EDUCATE YOU A BIT. SOME YEARS AGO A CATTLE PROPERTY WAS CATCHING WILD POLL HEREFORD CATTLE BY RUNNING THEM ON HORSE AND THROWING THEM WHEN THEY WERE RUN TO A STANDSTILL. WHEN THEY WERE YARDED MANY DIED BECAUSE THEY HAD BEEN RUN INTO THE GROUND AND OVER-HEATED. I KMOW THIS BECAUSE I WAS GETTING THE ONES THAT DIED FOR DOG FOOD. AFTER A TIME THEY BOUGHT BULL ARABS FROM ME AND CAUGHT THE CATTLE WITH THESE DOGS . SUDDENLY I WAS NOT GETTING ANY MORE MEAT. CAN YOU WORK OUT WHY?
I’LL TELL YOU – THE DOGS WERE CATCHING THEM IN SUCH A SHORT RUN THE CATTLE WERE NOT GETTING OVER-HEATED OR STRESSED ENOUGH TO DIE. SO YOU TELL ME WHICH IS THE CRUELEST – RUN A DEER WITH A RELENTLESS PACK OF HOUNDS FOR 30 MILES FOR HOURS AS THE RULES SAY OR 600 M WITH A BIG FAST DOG? ADMITTEDLY THE DEER STILL ENDS UP DEAD BUT IF CRUELTY IS THE CONSIDERATION THEN THE HOUNDS ARE THE WORST WAY. I’LL BET THE POLIES WEREN’T EXPLAINED ALL THAT. SO IF YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE DO-GOODERS YOU NOW KNOW A BIT MORE.
IN ADDITION TO SAMBAR BEING CAUGHT BY BIG FAST DOGS LIKE THE BRO OF MY BULL ARAB I SUSPECT SOME ARE USING SPOTLIGHTS WITH GUNS AND MAYBE EVEN A FAST DOG AT NIGHT AND THIS IS PROBABLY THE QUICKEST AND LEAST CRUEL WAY OF ALL. SO IF ITS ABOUT BREAKING THE LAW THAT CONCERNS YOU GO ARREST THESE LAW BREAKERS. IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT CRUELTY JUST SHUTUP.

  6. mike walker says:

  7. mike says:

    MIKE – RE BRUMBY CATCHING,
YES HOLDING – USUALLY BY THE EAR. BAILING WOULD BE USELESS IN THAT COUNTRY. ONE FAMOUS BULL ARAB HAS CAUGHT A LOT OF SAMBAR DEER IN VIC. I HAVE HIS BROTHER WHICH WAS THE PICK OF THE LITTER. A LITTER IS EXPECTED FROM HIM IN 4 WEEKS. IF YOU WANT A DOG TO CATCH BRUMBIES THESE DOGS WILL BE THE BEST AVAILABLE FOR THAT JOB AND WILL COME WITH A SOLID MONEY BACK GUARANTEE. I’VE ALSO SENT YOU AN EMAIL. DON’T BE SURPRISED THAT A GOOD BULL ARAB CAN CATCH A HORSE – THEY CATCH SAMBAR DEER AND BIG WILD BULLS AND I KNOW OF ONE BITCH USED FOR CATCHING WILD CAMELS AND THAT IS SOMETHING I’D LIKE TO SEE FOR MYSELF.
    REGARDS

  11. mike says:

    SAL,
PROBABLY THE BEST DOG I’M BREEDING RIGHT NOW FOR YOU TO WORK WITH YOUR BULLYGREYHOUNDS IS THE BULL STOP – THE BULL ENDUROS WOULD KILL THEM BY OVER-HEATING TRYING TO STAY WITH THEM, THE BULL ARABS WOULD OUTLAST THEM WITH BETTER FEET AND BEING ABLE TO TAKE MORE WORK OVER A W/E OUT WEST. THE BULL STOPS WOULD DO THE TRACKING AND WIND SCENTING OFF THE UTE AND YOUR DOGS WOULD TAKE OVER ONCE THE PIGS WERE IN SIGHT AND THAT WOULD WORK OUT PRETTY GOOD. YOUR DOGS WOULD GET ALL THE BACKUP EVER NEEDED AND THAT WOULD MAKE THEM WORK ALL THE BETTER. THAT WOULD BE A GOOD TEAM AND KEEP THINGS FROM GETTING TOO FAR AWAY – YES I COULD BE HAPPY WITH A TEAM LIKE THAT.

    TRUTH SEEKER,
I SENT YOU AN EMAIL – IT WAS RETURNED BECAUSE YOUR EMAIL IS NOT VALID. I DON’T KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND YOU HAVE BRIAN NEAL’S NAME IN YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS – HOW COME? YOU RIGHTLY CRITICIZE HIM AS HE IS A HOPELESS BREEDER AND DOES NOT HONOUR ANY GUARANTEES ON HIS DOGS – COMPLAINTS ABOUT HIM ARE NEVER ENDING AND I’M SURPRISED ANYONE IS STILL BUYING ANYTHING OFF HIM. I KNOW HE HAS PUT DANE, E.MASTIFF AND APBT INTO HIS LINE OF DOGS HE WRONGLY CALLS BULL ARABS.
I AM NOW RE-BUILDING THE BREED TO BE WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE. THE RE-BUILT BREED WILL BE CONCENTRATED AROUND THE TOWNSVILLE/INGHAM AREA. I’LL TRY TO BRING IN SOME GOOD BREEDERS FROM DOWN SOUTH. I’LL GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN IN – ITS UP TO THEM THEN.
